Ewa guided us in creating the perfect recipes from natural ingredients, to give our soaps that satisfying lather, noticeable moisturising properties, and achieve the delicate balance of cleansing without drying. Natural clays, steeped botanicals and powders are added with precision, to give each soap its individual properties, colour and texture. We use a generous percentage of essential oils to maximise aroma and benefits. Following scrupulous mixing, the soap is poured carefully into the moulds, using layering and marbling techniques for pattern and design. After all that creativity we then have to be patient to see the fruits of our labours - the curing process can take up to six long weeks! The women makers all live locally and work flexible hours around family commitments. It can take 45 minutes to fully felt a tray of felt balls. The artisans fold wool fleece into small pods, then each works to roll a wooden board over a tray containing 600 pods plus a smidgen of water and soap. A rock is added for weight partway through the process, helping the balls become denser through friction whilst minimising soap and water consumption. Fascinating to watch and fun to try too! The balls are dried en mass in the sun and then the artisans sit on the padded workshop floor, using their toes to keep the balls in place while hand-stitching and threading our decorations and felt dining range.
