Wool fabrics are resilient and easy care, providing low temperatures are used, and retain their natural qualities of insulation, breathability and elasticity. Due to its natural antibacterial properties, wool naturally resists odours and requires infrequent laundering. Wool is one of the most sustainable fabrics in existence; renewable and biodegradable, it requires relatively little water for its production. All earring hooks and studs are brass or brass with silver plating; they are nickel, lead and cadmium free. When coming up with their 'paper wood' collection, Quazi Design were experimenting with layering the magazine pages using water-based glue. The resulting shapes were raw and unfinished, and needed much more refining and developing. Inspiration struck when founder Doron was collecting wooden displays for their local retail shop in Swaziland from a local carpenter and she thought – why not treat it like wood? Using a sander, saw and drill, paper was brought back to its original form as wood. Using local skills and accessible tools, Quazi Design have created an innovative material and a beautiful finished product. Water-based varnish is used to enhance durability. The artisans make each product by hand, with minimal water, basic tools and sunlight. As much as possible the materials are locally sourced and environmentally friendly. When designing their products, Quazi Design aim to keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life. Paper is the traditional material for 1st wedding anniversary gifts. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, of historical and enduring importance because of its hardness and workability. They transform these waste magazines and newspapers into original designs, using simple yet pioneering workshop techniques. Born in 2010, out of a partnership between a designer and the local magazine distributor, Quazi Design aimed to create much needed employment in Eswatini, Southern Africa. What started as a trial in design for social impact has become a small thriving business with a solid community of local women artisans. Quazi Design believe in sustainable design, ethical production, transparency, and craftsmanship. Their products are all handmade by women that are employed full time at their workshop with permanent contracts. Wool is a natural insulator, with high breathability, and it resists odours due to its natural antibacterial properties. A strong thick thread is used to stitch the mats from the centre outwards with each ball secured to the next and to its inner neighbour. The women makers all live locally and work flexible hours around family commitments. It can take 45 minutes to fully felt a tray of felt balls. The artisans fold wool fleece into small pods, then each works to roll a wooden board over a tray containing 600 pods plus a smidgen of water and soap. A rock is added for weight partway through the process, helping the balls become denser through friction whilst minimising soap and water consumption. Fascinating to watch and fun to try too! The balls are dried en mass in the sun and then the artisans sit on the padded workshop floor, using their toes to keep the balls in place while hand-stitching and threading our decorations and felt dining range. The plant has to be cut back after the fruit harvest so that it regrows for the next season, and trading this waste product provides an extra income to the farmers. Growing profusely in the middle hills of Nepal at altitudes of 3900 feet to 10000 feet, allo fibre from the Giant Himalayan Nettle (Girardiniadiversifolia) has been used for centuries for clothing and around the home and farm. An amazing natural fibre, it is lightweight and cool in the summer but also warm in the winter. Allo is highly durable and becomes increasingly soft and pliable with wash and use. Our sustainable allo products are produced completely by hand.
