All earring hooks and studs are brass or brass with silver plating; they are nickel, lead and cadmium free. When coming up with their 'paper wood' collection, Quazi Design were experimenting with layering the magazine pages using water-based glue. The resulting shapes were raw and unfinished, and needed much more refining and developing. Inspiration struck when founder Doron was collecting wooden displays for their local retail shop in Swaziland from a local carpenter and she thought – why not treat it like wood? Using a sander, saw and drill, paper was brought back to its original form as wood. Using local skills and accessible tools, Quazi Design have created an innovative material and a beautiful finished product. Water-based varnish is used to enhance durability. The artisans make each product by hand, with minimal water, basic tools and sunlight. As much as possible the materials are locally sourced and environmentally friendly. When designing their products, Quazi Design aim to keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life. Paper is the traditional material for 1st wedding anniversary gifts. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, of historical and enduring importance because of its hardness and workability. Brass offers superior recyclability and overall environmental advantages as it can be recycled an infinite number of times with no loss in properties or performance.

Our partner Quazi Design focus on developing new and innovative techniques using only waste paper and want to change the perception of recycled materials. They transform these waste magazines and newspapers into original designs, using simple yet pioneering workshop techniques. Born in 2010, out of a partnership between a designer and the local magazine distributor, Quazi Design aimed to create much needed employment in Eswatini, Southern Africa. What started as a trial in design for social impact has become a small thriving business with a solid community of local women artisans. Quazi Design believe in sustainable design, ethical production, transparency, and craftsmanship. Their products are all handmade by women that are employed full time at their workshop with permanent contracts. A founding member of SWIFT, Swaziland fair trade, Quazi Design are an active advocate for fair trade principles. AURA QUE's Laura and Quazi Design founder, Doron, met at a trade show in 2017. Our founder Laura is "like a kid in a sweet shop" when she visits fabric trader Dhiraj who supplies our recycled saris. In this treasure trove of vibrant colours, intricate patterns, textures and sparkles, it can be very difficult to choose! With intricate printed patterns and luxurious smooth textures, saris are works of art, often passed down families through generations. Nepali culture is very waste-conscious and re-purposing fabrics that have reached the end of one stage of their lives is commonplace. We have given these fabrics a new lease of life, and another chance to tell their stories. Every piece is one of a kind. Almost all options will contain some silk and some options will be 100% silk; as these are recycled fabrics, we do not have access to the individual composition per item. These products are not suitable for vegans. The pillow inner is made from soft woven cotton called kora in Nepal. It is filled, in our Hastings studio, with dried rice and flax seed (linseed), both UK sourced, and UK grown dried lavender. Lavender is the traditional material for the 26th wedding anniversary gift.

The pillow can be used effectively at room temperature. It is filled, in our Hastings studio, with UK sourced dried rice, and UK grown dried lavender. The rice absorbs moisture to help resist mould, while lavender keeps your clothes smelling fresh! Lavender has been found to have positive impacts on mood, stress and anxiety, and to aid insomnia. The dropdown option colour is used for the trim or base colour, and this can be mixed and matched with our main knitwear range. Please note that the cheery colour combinations do vary slightly due to the upcycled nature of the product - every piece is unique and we think they are all lovely! Please take a look at our main knit range if you are looking for a specific colour. The eco waste wool range is unlined unless lining is stated in the description. Our hand-knitted products are made from 100% sheep wool. The shades of grey, brown and cream are completely natural, while other colours are produced using azo-free dyes. Wool fabrics are resilient and easy care, providing low temperatures are used, and retain their natural qualities of insulation, breathability and elasticity. Due to its natural antibacterial properties, wool naturally resists odours and requires infrequent laundering. Wool is one of the most sustainable fabrics in existence; renewable and biodegradable, it requires relatively little water for its production. Our wool is mulesing free.

Handmade by artisans within a World Fair Trade Organization certified collective in Kathmandu, Nepal. Our hand-knitted products are made by women who knit the pieces at home, working around their family commitments. This provides them with an income to help their families. Urmila coordinates the team of women, training them to produce each style and distributing the yarn and materials. The eco waste wool products utilise the wastage yarn from the AURA QUE wool knit collection to maximise efficiency and income for the producers.
