ABOUT THE COLOURWAY
Light Grey is a soft, natural melange created from undyed wool, with a predominantly pale grey appearance and delicate wisps of creamy off-white and charcoal grey fibre adding subtle natural variation. The chunky cable knit enhances its cosy, tactile character, bringing out the natural variation within the wool. Fresh and understated, this versatile light grey is perfect for snuggling up indoors, sitting naturally alongside wool blankets, linen, wood and other natural textures.
FIT & SIZING
L17xW13xD3cm. Height from heel is approx. 17cm and calf circumference up to S29-M31-L33cm. While the socks will mould gently to the wearer's feet with use, their lifespan will be extended if they are not overstretched.
HANDMADE IN NEPAL
AURA QUE has worked with the artisans who make our classic wool knitwear since 2009. The designs are hand-knitted by artisans in Kathmandu, Nepal, working within a collective certified by the World Fair Trade Organization. The knitters work from home, allowing them to fit their work around family commitments while earning an income. Urmila coordinates the team, training the women to produce each design and distributing the yarn and materials needed for production.
MATERIAL, CRAFT & NATURAL VARIATION
Our wool accessories are hand-knitted and crocheted from mulesing-free 100% sheep wool. A breathable and resilient fibre that is both renewable and biodegradable, wool naturally resists odours and requires relatively infrequent washing. Shades of grey, brown and cream are undyed, while other colours are produced using azo-free dyes. The accessories are finished with a soft black jersey cotton lining, sourced locally in Nepal, providing extra warmth and comfort against the skin. Some designs feature buttons carved from coconut shell.
MORE ABOUT THE ARTISAN PROCESS
- Design & training: Urmila works with AURA QUE on developing the samples, and then trains the knitters in the patterns and techniques needed for the final designs.
- Knitting by hand: Each piece is knitted or crocheted by hand using traditional knitting techniques. The women artisans are able to complete the work at home, fitting paid work around their family and other commitments.
- Adding the lining: A soft jersey cotton lining is fitted inside the knitted wool outer for extra warmth and comfort. Concealed seams are machine-stitched, while visible stitching is carefully finished by hand for a neat appearance.
- Finishing & checking: Each piece is carefully finished and checked before leaving the workshop. Subtle variations in the knitted finish reflect the character of something made by hand.
