Canvas is an extremely durable plain-woven fabric. Ours has a thick strong feel and a natural durability. While our medium weight and heavy cotton fabrics are woven from pre-dyed yarns, the cotton canvas is woven from the undyed cotton fibres before being dyed as a piece. Unlike many modern canvas fabrics we do not use any PVC in our canvas, which is 100% cotton. Our brass buckles and specialised fittings are handmade from brass by artisans in Kathmandu who hand cut, file and polish local Nepali brass into shape. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, of historical and enduring importance because of its hardness and workability. Brass offers superior recyclability and overall environmental advantages as it can be recycled an infinite number of times with no loss in properties or performance.
Handmade by a small Nepali workshop affiliated with the Nepal Leprosy Trust, which employs marginalised people, giving them opportunities through work. AURA QUE has worked with the team since 2006: developing new products, improving skills and providing equipment for the workshop. As a World Fair Trade Organization certified member, the workshop gives its employees a fair living wage, health care benefits and monthly contributions to their children's school fees.
